Indie singer-songwriter William Hinson released his new 90’s inspired single “She’s Hot,” Friday with a release on streaming services and an accompanying lyric video.
Hinson, a 26-year-old North Carolina native, calls his track a ‘sticky-sweet pop offering; that would have had his face plastered across the covers of Tiger Beat and M Magazine back in the days of pre-internet bliss.
Hinson’s music has gotten widespread attention with over 7 million streams on Spotify alone. In 2020, he released an album called Everything Will Be Okay. He has garnered the ears of indie fans and pop fans and even has a close-knit fanbase on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok.
Get to Know William Hinson:
Your new song is called “She’s Hot,” but who exactly is “she?”
William Hinson: “She” is actually my girlfriend’s best friend. Which is a hilarious joke. But it is very true, ha, just not how you’d think. Essentially it’s just a tune about a lot of her experiences. She’s a really close friend of mine and she would come and talk to me about things that were going on or things that were happening in her life. This is just my way of reiterating to her that certain situations are not really her fault. You’re like way hot and you’re way cool. My girlfriend’s cool with it, haha, she’s a really huge fan of this song. She said ‘okay, that’s cool.’ Even my dad is a huge fan.”
You have songs that range from Doo-Wop style to Beatles type tracks and now a 90’s pop bop. Is there a sole way to describe your sound?
William Hinson: “Well, I like to describe it as ‘genreful’ you know? Like a lot of times you’ll get musicians saying ‘I don’t sound like anything, I don’t do a genre, I’m genreless.’ But I feel like that leaves out a big portion of what you’re capable of if you’re in your own genre or lack thereof. It’s kind of indicative that you don’t really have direction. I think in terms of songs, I just want to do what the song calls for. If I have a topic and want to write about it as a duet, I’m going to make it a duet.”
What do you have planned after the release of “She’s Hot”?
William Hinson: From here on out there are going to be a bunch of singles. I’m really trying to get a new record done. Between all the other stuff that I have to do, some days I come in and try to tackle 10 songs. Some days it’s 14 and some days even 16 songs. I’m trying to figure out what I’m doing but I think a big portion of my next record is done.”
Any big plans for later this year?
William Hinson: “I’ll be out on tour in August, I’ll be out on the West Coast if everything works out. We are getting everything situated for that now. If everything works out it’ll be from LA up to Washington. And then like over towards the midwest. We’re really excited about it. I went out to LA last summer for like, three weeks. I absolutely loved it. Hopefully in October and November, there will be another tour. Probably more so like, an East Coast thing.”
