London-based singer-songwriter Valencia Grace quite literally graced us today with her new single “Goodbye.” The track is accompanied by a video that illustrates the precise meaning behind this song.
At just 18 years old, Grace is beginning to showcase her style as an artist and it should not go unnoticed. She first got into songwriting in her early teenage years, simply because she didn’t know of any other way to express the emotions she was feeling. After receiving positive feedback from her friends, Grace’s confidence as an artist grew and she felt compelled to share her music with the world. Prior to the release of her debut single, she had already gained over 2.5m TikTok followers. “It Was You” was released earlier this year and is nothing short of an ode to how vulnerable and raw Grace is as an artist.
“Every time you write a song you compartmentalize your trauma and turn it into something beautiful that helps you understand it,” she says of her process. “I love that about music.”
Today’s release of “Goodbye” provided us with more than we could’ve asked for from the singer. The song directly addresses a dwindling family relationship and its style can be easily connected to Grace’s soul, jazz, Motown and powerful female vocal influences like Adele and Amy Winehoue. For “Goodbye,” in particular, she says “It was so difficult, because it was about saying goodbye to someone who’s still right in front of you.”
The corresponding video has a vintage, film camera feel to it. It’s casual and simple, but at the same time, sincere and personal. We can appreciate that. Anybody who has had to leave someone behind or lost someone in the past will, without a doubt, relate to this song, its visuals and its beauty.
Grace’s voice is soft and angelic. “Goodbye” beautifully reflects Grace’s thoughts and emotions while simultaneously providing comfort to listeners. You know those songs that just feel like they’re giving you a hug? Yeah, this is one of those. She and this song truly exude beauty and grace.
