Swedish pop singer Tove Styrke has done it again with today’s release of “YouYouYou.” The new single exemplifies her strengths as an artist while tending to the sound we all know and love.
At just 29 years old, Styrke is a platinum-selling, grammy-nominated artist who has accumulated over one million fans. Initially gaining popularity in 2009 as a contestant on Swedish Idol, her third-place finish boosted her music career and helped pave the way to get where she is now. Since the release of her 2015 album, she has taken part in a number of headline tours, appeared at SXSW multiple times, and delivered a performance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, all while garnering support from fellow musicians like Sam Smith, Tove Lo and Shawn Mendes.
Styrke’s 2014 hit “Borderline” is widely recognized as it has been featured in a variety of on-screen scenes and social media videos. The release of her 2018 album Sway was a turning point in her career as its attention and success provided validity to who she is as an artist. Rolling Stone even placed “Say My Name,” a track from the album, at the #11 spot on its ‘Top Songs of 2017’ list. Styrke’s talent is ever-growing and her past collaborations with artists such as Cheat Codes and Travis Barker make that evident.
“YouYouYou” is a song from the artist’s upcoming album titled HARD, set to release on June 3. Its high-energy and emotion-filled demeanor elicits the feeling of being able to drive with the windows down and scream the lyrics. Who doesn’t want that, right? Right off the bat, the first line of the song reads “I’m in love with someone else, still I’m dreaming about you.” We know it’s going to be good from there.
Styrke’s voice is so captivating due to its powerful and strong, yet polished and soft nature. She makes singing about real-life heartache and issues sound so effortless. Reflecting on “YouYouYou,” she says “It’s the sunrise and the sunset. It’s the drama, the romance, the big bang of the album. To me it’s an instant classic and it has all the elements that I love in a big pop song. I love the analog vibes, it almost sounds like the music is on a VHS tape that you’ve recorded on over and over.”
A corresponding music video for the new single was also released today. Entirely shot on film and appealing to the nature of the track’s tone, the video was directed by Cornelia Wahlberg. It is nothing short of an artistic and expressive piece of work that accurately depicts each and every aspect of the song. It begins very whimsical and soft before taking off with expressive dance and movement, matching the tone and pace of “YouYouYou” perfectly. It is abundantly clear that Styrke put her all into this video and we can only imagine what the choreography-learning process was like.
We are continuously impressed by Tove Styrke and the music she delivers. Her sound evokes the desire to hit the ‘repeat’ button and continue listening. Due to her enthralling nature as an artist, we anticipate her upcoming album to be highly regarded and one that many will love.
