TORRES is back with another new song called “Wake to flowers” from her forthcoming sixth album What An Enormous Room slated for a January 26 release on Merge. She had previously released the singles “I got the fear” and “Collect” in support of the record. The latest release is accompanied by a music video directed by Dani Okon. Watch it below.
“Wake to flowers” takes on an art-pop sound. TORRES, the pen name for Brooklyn-based Mackenzie Scott, says the song takes on the disappointment that can follow hope.
“People are frighteningly resilient. We are regularly optimistic and regularly shattered by the want of something, maybe something that takes all our might and energy and then still doesn’t happen,” she said in a release. “But have you ever been anxious that things weren’t going to turn out the way you hoped, or maybe you weren’t very optimistic, and then you got everything you wanted? I feel like this happens a lot but I don’t hear it acknowledged very much.”
The song starts simply with stand-alone drums and vocals before the rest of the instruments come in for an orchestrated piece. There are electric guitars and thumping bass on the track. The lyrics revolve around a single line that Scott sings seven times throughout, repeating “Didn’t know I’d wake to flowers after going to sleep to rain,” which she echoes again and again until the tune is over.
TORRES will hit the road for tour dates supporting What An Enormous Room before its official release. She will play in the US, EU and UK starting in January before wrapping up in April. Pop rocker Liza Anne and folk singer Aisha Burns will open on select dates. Tickets for all dates are on sale now. Tickets can be purchased here. Scroll down to see where the tour is heading.
The official bio for What An Enormous Room was written by Julien Baker, who praises the upcoming album by saying “If TORRES’ music gets weird, gets brainy, gets
funny, gets defiant, provokes, deliberately scandalizes, employs the crass to undermine the austere, courts lofty philosophical truth — it’s all done with the conviction of an artist with the (essential) belief in the worth of their task.”
Scott took up many roles on What An Enormous Room. She lends her hand to playing guitar, bass, synth, organ, piano and programmed drums.
