Atlanta singer-songwriter Teddy Swims has returned with a fresh take on his single “Broke,” this time with multi-Platinum country music star Thomas Rhett. The duo put out the new version of the track on Oct. 23.
Jaten Dimsdale, better known as Teddy Swims, first released the song on Aug. 28 and received rave reviews from the likes of Idolator, Flaunt, American Songwriter and even critic Bob Lefsetz, who said, “I’d say it’s a one listen smash, but that’s not an accurate description, IT’S A FIFTEEN SECOND SMASH!”
Swims’ latest rendition of “Broke” takes nothing away from the original track but, in fact, adds another dimension to it in the form of Rhett’s verse.
The new version preserves Swims’ baritone as well as the upbeat rhythm and pace of the song. As the song nears its peak, Rhett enters with his country twang, complementing Swims’ Motown-inspired tune and elevating the song which is all about getting used to having money and enjoying the finer things in life.
A collaboration that no one was expecting or looking out for, Swims and Rhett seemed to effortlessly mesh well together both in the song as well as the music video that accompanied the new rendition.
An homage to being wealthy, the video features Rhett and Swims getting into all sorts of antics at a golf course — with golf being a metaphor for wealth as it’s popularly considered a “rich man’s sport.”
Swims is decked up in an insane amount of gold jewelry — from grills to chains to earrings to rings on his fingers. He can be seen being frivolous with his spending habits, buying things he probably won’t even use, just because he can. These habits seem to be common with people who have recently amassed a sizeable amount of money, which goes hand in hand with the hook of the song, “I’m so used to being broke, but not no more,”
A fun, upbeat pop song with country influences, “Broke” does a great job of alleviating tensions and making people feel better. With the way this year has shaped out to be, this might be just the respite people needed.
