Two years after his breakthrough single “Old Town Road”, Lil Nas X has released his debut album titled MONTERO. Montero is the artist’s birth name, which is quite fitting. This album allows us to see Lil Nas X in his most true and comfortable form.
In March 2021, Lil Nas X released title track “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)”, immediately bringing attention to his project, especially from the LGBTQ+ community. The song displays themes relating to homosexuality, which Lil Nas X is very vocal about. In the music video, Lil Nas X is seen descending down a stripper pole to the depths of hell where he performs explicit acts with the devil. While the video for this song is deemed controversial, fans were all about it.
The album consists of 15 songs and features a lot of well-known artists ranging from Elton John to Jack Harlow to Miley Cyrus. The songs are extremely catchy and fall into the pop-rap category. However, there is clear influence from those he collaborated with and their genres, making it more than just that.
Aside from the trap beats and distorted rock sound his music has, Lil Nas X’s lyrics are quite heartfelt when you listen closely. In songs like “SUN GOES DOWN” or “VOID”, fans get a deeper look at his emotional side and struggling past.
It is evident by his euphoric music videos and whimsical posts, that Lil Nas X is trying to transport fans and listeners into his own world – the world of Montero- and we’re so ready to visit him there!
