Beyond The Stage recently had the pleasure of chatting with TELYKast, from a safe distance of course! The trio from Los Angeles consists of Linus Kurosaki, Kyle Tenoli and Trevor Klaiman. The band prides themselves on being an electronic pop group with live instrumentation. They have recently gained a lot of attention on TikTok with their newest single “DAYLIGHT”. TELYKast gained the attention of the right people, after “DAYLIGHT” took off, they were signed to their first record label, Astralwerks! In our chat we got to talk to them about their single, signing to a label and more.
BTS: What was it like signing with Astralwerks?
Trevor: That was very interesting because we had been talking to them for awhile, maybe like a year or so before we signed. We sent them out music and we just really loved what they were doing and the artists they have. They have some big names especially in the dance world, like in our eyes they are one of the best. We sent our music to them and had been in communication with them.
Once we released “DAYLIGHT” it started getting traction on TikTok and really getting attention everywhere. There was like a week where we got hit up by a lot of labels but Astralwerks reached out and that is exactly who we wanted. We signed with them a few weeks after that, It moved very quickly.
Linus: It was pretty awesome. We wanted to have a home there for a long time. We reached out like a year ago and they liked what we had but said ya know lets keep an eye on it. We have had a bunch of different songs throughout the years of doing this. We have always had a very cohesive thread of being organic and very musical. When we had “DAYLIGHT” kinda take off, Astralwerks reached back out, and even though there were a bunch of labels we always wanted to be with them. It was perfect and has been great so far!
Kyle: It was so amazing. We had been speaking with them like a year ago. That was always our goal and top choice for a label. Once “DAYLIGHT” started really moving and taking off, they reached back out and it kinda just fell into place. It was cool to have something go so well, and we ended up where we always wanted to be.
BTS: What was the inspiration behind “DAYLIGHT” ?
Trevor: I kind of started the song in its bare bone forms, it’s me singing on there. I had the idea and the hook and melody and everything like that. A lot of the song was based on like going out in LA and everything in that whole night time scene. We met this guy who goes by the name “One True God” at a Halloween party. We really hit it off and wanted to work on something together.
We already had the idea for “DAYLIGHT” and showed it to him and it took it to the next level. It was like a true collaboration on that. The song is really just based on the LA lifestyle and just how that whole going out scene is.
Linus: I was in New York when the guys were coming up with it. They were hitting the clubs for a while and you know dance music has always been our thing. I think there was a period where it was very club oriented though, ya know? It was kinda like seeing the sinister side of the scene of LA. The lifestyle of the nightclub scene. It went perfectly with the production. It’s very much like dancing in the club.
Kyle: So it was a collaboration with this producer named One True God who we met at a Halloween party. We had always been fans of his. We had the initial idea and got together with him to finish it. It was such a pleasure to work with him because we are a big fan of his stuff. From there it was really quick. We didn’t make the song for TikTok but we thought that it would do well on there. It did. So it was just kind of crazy how it happened so quickly.
BTS: What was it like being on the remix of “Friends” by Mishaal?
Trevor: That was actually a really cool opportunity that came about. We really loved the song already and we loved what he is doing as an artist. Powfu is featured on the track and he is a big hip hop person as well, we just really love the song. When we got the opportunity to do the remix we kind of did it and turned it around in a day. We were super inspired by it and we’re so happy with how it turned out.
Linus: We heard the song and loved it. Before we even started with it, it was pretty obvious what it was going to be. It was like a one day turn around and we banged it out. It’s great and we loved it. I think the sound we put on it has been really great. It is a good mix of his voice and the hip hop of Powfu as well.
Kyle: That was really cool too because we were super familiar with the featured artist Powfu and we really liked the song. Powfu also has some super successful songs on TikTok. When we heard the song initially we were extremely excited and had a bunch of ideas that came to mind. We were so happy to have had that opportunity!
BTS: Would you ever consider making your own version of a dance to DAYLIGHT on TikTok?
Trevor: We have had a lot of different people create dances to the song already and there is a trend going on right now that’s like what would you do if you were stuck in your friends bodies for the day, so we’re trying to get more people to do that and incorporate the song. There have been so many good dances already though.
Linus: I would totally create my own version of a dance, I mean why not? That is hilarious though I have never been asked that . I would do like a chop and screw thing like they do on TikTok. Like when they start at the original tempo and then slow it down halfway through. I’d do something like that, and rip off it a bunch of different ways I think.
Kyle: Yeah of course, we love the platform, and we have a pretty decent following on there for us being a music page. We love doing anything and everything. It wasn’t us but there was a pretty successful dancer who made a song for daylight so that is super cool to see who supported the song on that platform.
BTS: What are you looking forward to most in the future?
Trevor: We have so much new music and we are so excited about that. We are constantly creating because of quarantine. It has kept us creating music and focusing on just music. Before the quarantine we were looking forward to touring and starting touring and playing shows. We can’t wait to start playing shows. That is what we are most excited about. We also have some remixes and new music coming out within the next few months that we are super excited about too.
Linus: Touring would be awesome but that is like a foreign concept right now. But making music every day and staying creative with the production process and sharp with the writing process. I wanna incorporate odd and bizarre retro sounds and things that are not every day in the box traditional production tools. We are constantly learning and staying busy with music!
Kyle: Honestly touring is the biggest thing. We have been working a lot during quarantine and during this time off. We are definitely ready to go once things are back to normal. Hopefully sooner rather than later. We also have a lot of upcoming music and collaborations we’re looking forward to. The most exciting thing for us is probably just releasing new music. We have our new song we’re planning right now that should be out in a few months and some remixes also, so a lot of exciting stuff!
