Florida singer-songwriter Taylor Castro released her newest single “Ophelia’s Flowers” yesterday morning. Starting at age 12, she began writing music and posting her singing online. She got into the Miami music scene, working with Willy Perez-Feria, Rudy Pérez who has worked with Beyoncé and Jennifer Lopez, and Kyng David. This led to her 2018 debut album PURE.
Castro has her second album on the way, which includes songs all written by the rising star herself. GIRL, AFRAID‘s first single taps into her struggle with OCD. She hopes this track can reach and help other people struggling with similar issues. The “Girl, Afraid” single music video is a moving production directed by Michael “Tizzy” McWhorter.

The second single is “Abyss,” which also accompanies a video. The video features her PMA Records labelmate Carson Rowland. The single was dropped in May and has over 1 million views.

Her latest release “Ophelia’s Flowers” was inspired by middle school experience.
“I watched Hamlet for the first time in sixth grade and fell in love with Ophelia because she was played by Helena Bonham Carter, who I thought kind of looked like me,” Castro said. “As I grew older, my appreciation for Ophelia grew too. They called her weak, but I disagreed. She stood in front of the royal court barefoot, giving them little bouquets that symbolized insults. I thought, what if I could create a pop song, seemingly innocent as a flower, and use it to critique society? That is how ‘Ophelia’s Flowers’ was born.”
The powerful song focuses on how societal expectations ruin us, like they did Ophelia. A true critic to society, Castro’s song proves powerful and unforgettable. It incites an intellectual experience alongside pure enjoyment.
