There’s a certain expectation that comes along with the release of a self-titled record. It’s almost as if the band is putting a definitive seal of “this is us” on the album, promising that the contents within reflect the very essence of their sound.
If this theory holds true, State Champs proves that the pop-punk act’s musical DNA is nothing short of magnetic.
Bursting with catchy hooks, memorable lyrics and masterful instrumentation, the 12-track record is a true testament to the band’s continued excellence. Building on the group’s signature sound, State Champs shows a continued dedication to both refining and evolving their work with each release.
Highlight track “Clueless” offers a distinct narrative approach to the lyrics, chronicling the ups and downs of an unrequited love. It’s a bright and memorable track, boasting a stand-out instrumental break before the bridge that is sure to become a fan-favorite moment.
“Tight Grip” feels like an ideal addition to the band’s already lively setlist. This track is just fun – plain and simple. It’s an easy sing-along, and a track that is nearly overflowing with energy. It’s punchy, defiant and impossible to resist hitting replay after the final note fades away. Other tracks that follow suit include “The Constant,” “I Still Want To” and “Hell Of It.”
Derek DiScanio shines in “Just a Dream,” delivering some of his most impressive vocals to date. The song is an easy favorite, getting stuck in the listener’s head long after its run time.
The record has its share of surprises, particularly in “Save Face Story.” What begins as a classic State Champs song takes an unexpected and bold turn halfway through its run.
Tucked at the very end of the record is our favorite track, “Golden Years.” This closer manages to be both wistful and optimistic in tone, creating a richly dynamic emotional core. Boosting lyrics like “putting the past up on a shelf and falling in love with something else,” this track leaves a lot of food for thought. The instrumentals are slick throughout, the melody is infectious and the layered vocals on the bridge are a true standout moment on the record.
The album also features a few previously released singles: “Silver Cloud,” “Too Late to Say” and “Light Blue.”
From start to finish, State Champs never falters. It’s a cohesive offering that stays true to the group’s legacy, proving once more why this band has become so beloved in the genre.
State Champs’ fifth studio album is set to release on November 8th, 2024.
