Sleepwalker – Logan Henderson
After waiting for almost entirely too long, Logan Henderson released “Sleepwalker” early last year. In all honesty, I ended up listening to this track on repeat so many times that I got flagged as a bot on Spotify for repetitious activity. With an accompanying music video that creates an almost haunting effect, “Sleepwalker” was the perfect grunge pop song that I needed in my life at the time. – Addie Whelan, Editor In Chief
Thru These Tears – LANY
It’s been really difficult to listen to anything aside from this song since it’s release. “Thru These Tears” is the kick off to LANY’s sophomore album, and it doesn’t disappoint. The song chronicles the pain and heartache one goes through during a break up. Throughout the song, LANY’s frontman tries to convince himself that things will get better, even though it’s hard to see that when you’re feeling such intense heartache. The hook slightly changes sonically each time it plays throughout the song, which is a quality that makes me even more obsessed with the song. “Thru These Tears” is the perfect introduction into the next chapter of music for LANY. – Gina Scarpino, Photo Editor
Open Your Eyes – Snow Patrol
Snow Patrol is one of those bands that you listen to and will never be the same after you do. Gary Lightbody’s voice in every single song Snow Patrol has released is incredibly soothing and genuine. In short, it’s simple and it’s real. Since the first time I heard this song I knew it was going to be on my playlist for a long time much like many other Snow Patrol songs. When this particular song was used in the scene from The Office when Jim hands Pam a dvd of all their memories together and why it’s important that she sees all the good they have, it really couldn’t have been any more perfect. This song can be interpreted in many ways but to me, this song is all about overcoming your doubt and opening your eyes to all the good that’s around you and part of your life. Open your eyes takes me to that place that makes me feel safe and happy, it takes me to a place where I realize life is amazing and we should see it that way. Alicia Rangel, Art Director
Speechless – Dan and Shay
I don’t know what it is about this song that makes it so easy to listen to on repeat all the time. Maybe it’s the lyrics or the deeper meaning, or just the fact that whenever it comes on shuffle I literally scream the lyrics, whatever the reason I am obsessed with this song. The way they speak about the love of their life. It’s a love ballad and in the cutest way. You can tell when you listen to the song that Dan and Shay wrote this to be directed to the love of their lives and it is absolutely beautiful. “Speechless” was the love song of the summer and a song I am sure that people are having their first dance to at their wedding, I know I would. – Samantha Aneed, Contributing Writer
Tiger Teeth – Walk the Moon
I hadn’t gone to a Walk the Moon concert until early 2018, and so my only exposure to the song was from the various low quality phone recordings that exist on YouTube. It’s a song that was only a live treat for years, and it’s had a slow evolution over those years. Once the band decided to release a studio version of “Tiger Teeth,” I was in love. I love all of 2017’s What if Nothing, but when the album was released I listened to the one song on repeat for weeks. It’s still a song that makes me way too emotional, but I can’t stop listening or singing along to it. I guess sometimes it really does take a few years for an artist to perfect a song. I think they absolutely nailed it with this final version, and (for me) “Tiger Teeth” is the best song Walk the Moon has written. – Joe Hernandez, Contributing Photographer
Once in a Lifetime – Talking Heads
This is definitely not a new obsession – this is probably one of my favorite songs, and whenever it comes on the radio or one of my playlists, I somehow feel relaxed. I love how it somehow combines ambient music with a catchy hook that blends so well with the percussion parts. A few years ago, I looked up the meaning of the lyrics, and I just loved the message of how people let things happen to them and sometimes live life almost unconsciously. I think it’s so important to not let the days go by and water flow around you. This is a song that I will never get tired of listening to. – Abby Fox, Senior Contributor
This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody) – Talking Heads
I feel like I’ve definitely had this song on a staff picks before which is maybe a testament to it making it onto this list but it’s been one of those songs I will listen to for hours for years now. It’s my go to when I’m down and I need to feel better and it always works after a couple plays. Lines like “It’s okay, I know nothing’s wrong” and “Home is where I want to be but I guess I’m already there” make this song the perfect one for when I just need to chill out after getting stressed out or upset about something. There are very few songs that make me feel such a strong urge to dance around my room without a care in the world. David Byrne performed this song right after sunset at Coachella this year and I definitely cried a little, there’s something so special about getting to see one of your favorite songs live from the second row. – Marissa Sandoval, Contributing Photographer
Time To Go – The Maine
This song—and entire album—feeds my “I’m feeling carefree and nostalgic” state of mind. It’s my go-to summer road trip, day at the beach, late night with friends song. Obviously, this obsession is far from new and timely, but I’ll be the first to admit I still blast this song on full-volume even 10 years later. The songs on Can’t Stop Won’t Stop introduced me to the 8123 family and I couldn’t be more obsessed with the kindness, openness, and authenticity of everyone involved. “Time To Go” is a timestamp on the moment I felt a part of something bigger in the music industry, and I’ll forever include it on my favorite playlists. – Kristen Humphries, Contributing Writer
This is Gospel – Panic! At the Disco
Panic! at the Disco is one of my favorite bands, and “This is Gospel” is probably my favorite song out of them all. Whether it’s the original version or just Brendon Urie with a piano, it’s just a beautiful song. The piano version is especially my favorite, because it really shows Urie’s incredible vocals. If there’s one song I would show to someone to represent Panic! at the Disco, it would be this song. I can listen to this song all day, every day and I would be completely happy. The song, written about former drummer Spencer Smith’s addiction to drugs and alcohol, has become an anthem for anyone going through a tough time. – Delaney DeAngelis, Deputy Editor
Somebody Else – The 1975
I have always loved all of the music The 1975 had put out. However, when this track came out it couldn’t even compare to the rest in my eyes. I love everything about this song: the beat, the chorus, the earnest lyrics. This song is not only one of my favorite The 1975 tracks, but one of my favorite songs of all time. I can never just listen to it once, I have to put it on repeat and listen to it a bunch of times every time. The story of this song is one that many can really connect with; seeing the one you used to be with be with somebody else, and how that can hurt, even if you don’t want them for yourselves anymore. – Lauren Klonowski, Senior Contributing Writer
Itch – Nothing But Thieves
I love all of Nothing But Thieves music but there’s just something about the song “Itch” that will always have a place in my heart. Doesn’t matter where or when it comes up on shuffle, I refuse to skip it. I remember this being the first song I ever listened to from the band and watching the music video, as well, made me obsessed. I can close my eyes while listening and see the music video in my head. I honestly don’t think I’ll ever get tired of hearing this song. – Chelsea Gresh, Contributing Photographer
Chasing Highs – Alma
I have been obsessed with the song since I first heard it. This song is so fun. It’s very upbeat and just makes you want to get up and dance or have it blasting while driving around with friends. I first heard of Alma when I heard her song “Karma” while doing research on SXSW artists and all of her songs are obsession worthy. – Bailey Flores, Contributing Photographer
Genesis – Ravyn Lenae
No other songs makes me feel like this song does. It’s a pretty upbeat tune, but Ravyn’s calm voice chills the overall mood. I’ll play this song on repeat for hours whenever I’m in a creative rut. Something about the way she weaves words together inspires me to create, without fail. – Nicolita Bradley, Contributing Photographer
No Angel – Charli XCX
Over the past several months, Charli XCX has been as busy as ever, releasing a new single or two ever month. While all four singles released so far show Charli at her absolute best, “No Angel” is without a doubt my favorite. The song was first played all the way back in 2016, when she performed it live for the first time, but it wasn’t until last month that it finally got a proper release. Lyrically, the track shows Charli acknowledging that while she isn’t an angel right now, that she could learn to be one. The track’s slippery, thumping beat, paired with arguably some of Charli’s most poignant vocals, help make “No Angel” stand out for all the right reasons. – Blake Charles, Contributing Photographer and Writer
Four Out Of Five – Arctic Monkeys
If you’ve been lucky enough to see the Arctic Monkeys on their recent tour or at any of the recent festival dates, you know first hand that they’re back and better than ever. Their new single, Four Out Of Five, really ushers you into the new era of the band. I have been hearing this song on alternative radio since it came out and it’s become one of my new favorites after seeing one of their recent shows. If you haven’t listened to the new album yet, listen to this song and it will definitely get caught in your head! – Alyssa Buzzello, Contributing Photographer
Come back to Earth – Mac Miller
The opening track to Mac Miller’s latest album “Swimming” is a perfect way to sum up who Mac is as an artist. With beautiful strings, a wonderful chord progression, the melody of the song, and the classic key sound, this song isn’t just about rap. Mac Miller isn’t just about rap. Though he is a rapper, he has had multiple side projects including a jazz group called Larry Lovestein & The Velvet Revival. The sadness in the song shows how Mac is more than just a “money, drugs, women” type of rapper. This album is a new step for Mac Miller, and this track shows it best. – Stone Fenk.
