Known for her ability to draw deeply into her emotions, singer-songwriter sad alex recently released her first EP, crydancing. Although early into her career, the Los Angeles-based artist has already garnered the attention of many.
The 2020 single “i’m glad that you found someone” from sad alex has amassed over three million Spotify streams. This, however, is not her only song to be recognized. “ibtc” received quite a bit of attention on TikTok this year, a platform where sad alex now has over 300K followers. She commonly teases upcoming music on her profile, all of which covers every emotional ground out there.
Released on November 12, crydancing is her largest collection of work yet. The seven-song EP captures sad alex in a direct and intimate manner, something many of us want to see in the artists we choose to listen to. The first song, “until,” delivers an electro-pop production to reflect on memories from past relationships. With lyrics like “was I better off before you,” she is transparent right off the bat.
Featuring mike., “one that got away” is upbeat, catchy and shares feelings of regret while questioning if she should have done something different. Sad alex makes a transition to doing what is best for her with “dating myself.” The lyrics “no one knows me better and is better for myself” embrace loving oneself and all that one has to offer. It’s a great message and one that will resonate with many.
A remix of “ibtc” featuring MILES is even thrown in halfway through the EP, and right after is “come over,” a candid experience that tells a story. Before finishing off with the ever so delicate “california queen,” the title track “crydancing” encapsulates all that was needed to tie everything together. She said it “was made to inspire people to dance even when they’re sad” and we could all use a little bit more of that kind of message in our lives.

This EP is a representation of everything that sad alex brings to the table as an artist. The songs are honest and the lyrics share their own narrative by shedding light on real-life experiences. Something that makes her songs so enthralling is that she shares what others are afraid to, and honestly, we respect her for it.
