Funk, soul pop artist, Remi Wolf, just released a new EP that was recorded live at Electric Lady Studios in New York City.
The EP includes six songs, half of which are from her existing discography. Three of the tracks (“wyd,” “Liz,” and “Grumpy Old Men”) are from her debut album, Juno (Deluxe). The second track on her new live recorded EP is “Woo!” which is from her second EP I’m Allergic To Dogs! which was released in 2020. Two more songs remain on the new EP, one of which is “Sauce” which is the first track off her debut EP, You’re A Dog! Remi Wolf also put a cover of Frank Ocean’s “Pink + White” on her new EP, Live at Electric Lady.
Electric Lady Studios was commissioned by rock musician Jimi Hendrix in 1968. Since then, numerous notable musicians have recorded in the studio including Stevie Wonder, John Lennon, AC/DC, Kanye West, Adele, and many more. We were thrilled to see that Remi Wolf was releasing an EP recorded live at Electric Lady.
The first track off the EP is “wyd” from Juno (Deluxe). Something that sticks out is the funky guitar sound as well as the brief, staccato trumpet additions in the background. You can hear the energy that Remi Wolf brings to the stage in just her voice through these recordings. “Woo!” is next up on the EP and has almost a salsa feel with the cross-stick snare sound in the beginning. Like the rest of the songs on the EP, it’s incredibly groovy and hard not to move to.
“Sauce” brings back the funky guitar sound as well as a trumpet sound accompanying the lyrics in the beginning. With almost a reggae feel, we are happy to see that this track made it onto the EP. Putting “Liz” on this EP was a no brainer, this song was made to be recorded at Electric Lady. It really displays the range Remi Wolf brings to the table. The keyboard in it is incredible and really displays the musicality that her whole team possesses.
We are absolutely thrilled to see that Frank Ocean’s “Pink + White” is covered on this EP. According to Remi Wolf’s Instagram:
“When I was presented with the entire Electric Lady catalog of songs to choose from for this live recording, I was toggling between doing AC/DC or Frank Ocean. I knew I could do the AC/DC song because I know their catalog really well and I am a screamer belter type of girl. But Pink + White kept nagging at me being like “I’m the best song ever” so I decided to challenge myself by putting my own spin on it. Thank you Frank Ocean for writing such an incredible toon that I was really able to sink my teeth into.”
We love that Remi Wolf put her own style into the lyrics by varying the tones and pitches. We are really happy with how this cover turned out!
“Grumpy Old Men” is the final track and rounds out the EP as a whole, no disappointments here. If there’s a song that can really show her range this song is it. Again, you can feel the energy Remi Wolf put into recording this track and it makes it so fun to listen to. She really is a screamer belter type of girl.
Overall, we are so pleased with this EP, Live at Electric Lady. It’s great seeing a new side of Remi Wolf that not many people get to see unless they go to one of her shows. We wish she could do this with her whole track list, her voice is addicting and her energy is contagious. We can’t wait to see what authentic work Remi Wolf has next!
