Red Ribbon is back with their 3rd full-length album, Planet X.
This 31 minute album consists of 11 tracks that all have a similar and cohesive feel. Red Ribbon released her first full-length album, Freaks Only, in 2017. She followed that album up with Dark Party in 2018. After releasing several singles, we’re so happy Planet X is finally here.
The album begins with the song “Weight of Man.” This song begins with a beautiful piano intro. It’s a soft and soothing intro to the album. It’s a relaxing song that would pair well with late night drives.
“Weight of Man” flows almost seamlessly into the second track “Way.” This song was first released as a single before the album came out. This song shows more upbeat characteristics because of the drums and guitar being added in; it has a solid beat throughout the song.
Like “Way,” “High” was also first released as a single. Similar to the first track, this song is more acoustic but it does pick up. Red Ribbon’s Emma Danner absolutely crushes the vocals not only in this song but throughout the album. We could listen to her sing all day.
“Human Copy” has electric sounding accents throughout the song and we think that really sets it apart from the rest. “Planet X” is the next song on the Planet X album. The harmonies of the vocals cut through in the end of the chorus. The breaks into major chords also brings a joyful feeling to this song.
We make our way to the middle of the album with “Sun.” This song has a very vibey feel. It’s hard to not tap your foot and bounce your head. The tambourine cuts through in this song and is steady throughout.
“Hold” starts with an eerie feel. The low notes make it feel ominous and dark, a new feeling on this album. With the lyrics “let me go, save my soul” it’s hard to not feel a darker mood through this song. “Renegade” was also put out first as a single. This song changes the mood back to a more relaxed and calm feel. The drums are added back in and it’s another groovy, vibey song.
The next song on the tracklist is “Document.” This song feels a little bit dreamy. The guitar sound in this song is well placed and brings out the acoustic feel. The tambourine is accented again and it adds to the drumset going in the background.
“Away From Here” is the second to last song. It has a good bass line that is heard throughout the 2 minute and 44 second song. Although this is the shortest song on the tracklist, it is packed with emotion. Planet X ends with an upbeat song, “Score.” The hints of electronic music are back for this song and we think it adds a lot to the production value of the album as a whole.
Although some of the songs stray from their typical sounds, Planet X sticks with Red Ribbon’s signature style – soft rock. The cover art for the album really captures the overall mood of the album well, it’s edgy but has warm colors. This is her third studio album and we can’t wait to see what else she has in store for us, hopefully a tour is in the works!
We hope you love Planet X as much as we do!
