The exciting thing about Max Bennett Kelly is that he isn’t caught up on titles. Identifying as one thing does not preclude him from identifying as another. Helming the role of singer, songwriter, director, and graphic designer, Kelly has a large repertoire to pull from which comes in handy as he builds his musical career and unique brand. Handling everything from merchandise design to his video direction, the artist doesn’t fit any definite box. And with only four songs out and over 100,000 Spotify saves, Kelly clearly possesses something special. Whatever it is, he shows no signs of losing it as he debuts his latest single “Fresh Green at the Gallery.”
Written and produced by Kelly (who also directed and edited the accompanying music video), “Fresh Green at the Gallery” documents a single night of realization for him. One evening, the rising star found himself at an event in an art gallery attended by various celebrities beloved by him and countless others. Being the new (or rather green) artistic hopeful on the scene, Kelly felt out of place in the presence of such established and idolized people. In a press release, he reveals, “early on in my music career I thought I had imposter syndrome, but I had this brutal moment of self-awareness when I figured out it wasn’t some syndrome, I was just an actual imposter.”
However, after listening to this song, most will disagree with Kelly. “Fresh Green at the Gallery” lures listeners in with a quick and loose—almost seemingly carefree—tempo but delivers a sucker punch with its raw and nuanced lyrics. “Fresh Green at the Gallery” is a layered triumph. Its creator is far from being an imposter. After this, he should proudly change his descriptor from green to established.
