1. Introduce yourself for our readers!
Hello! How’s it going? My name is Andrew Feyer, but most people just call me by my last name, Feyer. I am a singer, songwriter, producer, remixer, and audio engineer from New York. I play a few instruments, but I am most known for my keytar! In 2017, I released my debut album, Signals Internalized. Last year, I released a video game-inspired track called “Stuck in a Video Game.” Now, I’m thrilled to be releasing a song I’ve had in the works for over three years: “Parties!”
2. Describe your sound for someone who hasn’t heard it before.
I always describe my sound as mainly a mix of rock and electronic, with several other random elements thrown into the mix. That may sound a bit open-ended, but I try not to tell a new listener too much, and instead just have them hear a song and decide from there what they can compare it to and how it makes them feel.
3. Who do you draw musical inspiration from?
Anyone and everyone, anything and everything. One of the most difficult questions for me to answer is “who are your main influences?” Because I have so many, it’s hard for me to narrow it down to just a few. I don’t limit my inspirations by style or time period. Lately, however, I’ve found myself listening to a lot of 80s Prog and New Wave groups such as The Police, Genesis, Rush, and Tears for Fears. I also dig more modern boundary-pushing artists like LCD Soundsystem, Tame Impala, The 1975, etc. To me, the most inspiring artists are ones who don’t fit so neatly into a box, and are comfortable in their own skin and can transcend scenes and genres.
4. Your sound can be identified by a ton of different genres, how did you find that?
I listen to many different kinds of music, and whatever I hear, I think to myself, “how can I try my hand at something like this?” I don’t usually think in terms of genre when I compose and produce. Genre is a tool that helps us classify music. But genre is also malleable. Genres can be combined in ways that create something truly new. I’m certainly not the first to combine genres in my music, or compose for many different genres, or compose outside of the concept of genre entirely. There have been many bands before me that have done that, and there will be many bands after me that will do that, too.
5. What can you tell us about your new track “Parties”?
“Parties!” has been in the works for a few years now. I first had the idea for it when I was in college after I broke six bones in my foot and had to get surgery. During my recovery time, I was missing out on the one thing that is most important to many college students: partying! I was also feeling a real sense of social anxiety and isolation at the time, though I still felt pressure to go out and socialize. Thus, “Parties!” was born. This final version was co-produced and mixed by Kyle Duke (of the Brown Bag Boys, Brkyn Love, and Upright Man) and mastered at the Cutting Room Studios. Some friends have described the song as “if Andrew WK was actually an introverted outcast.” I hope this track can strike a nerve with both the hardcore partiers who go out and get trashed every weekend and the socially awkward kids standing in the corner.
6. What’s next for you in the rest of 2019?
Many things! Coming up soonest: the outrageous “Parties!” music video will be released at the end of June, followed up with a release show at Brooklyn Bazaar, supporting Duke Sims, lead singer of the ever-present NYC band Shinobi Ninja. In addition to that big show, I anticipate that I will focus more on trying to collaborate with as many artists as possible in the NYC music scene and beyond. Also, look out for some tasty remixes from my DJ/remixing side project, called Draniods.
7. How can our readers find you online?
I mostly interact with people on Instagram and Facebook but can be found pretty much anywhere on the internet (since I’m pretty addicted to my phone and laptop haha). Just search my name or my handle, @feyermusic.
