Without a doubt, Zara Larsson was born to be a popstar. After winning Sweden’s version of Got Talent at the age of 10, Larsson has been wowing the world with her unbelievable pipes, sticky-sweet tunes, sassy dance abilities, and killer stage presence. Last Wednesday night, Portland’s Wonder Ballroom was fortunate enough to see the now 21 year old Larsson in the flesh, for a night of pure pop perfection.
When Larsson emerged, she stood atop a large reflective perch on the back of the stage, smiling and posing for the elated crowd. Moments later, the opening swell of “Symphony”, a collaboration with Clean Bandit, began to play, which got the already amped up crowd all the more excited. Larsson’s incredible vocals soared over the glistening production, all while a colorful array of lights shone down from above. A glorious way to start the show.
As the show continued, the energy in the room only increased. Larsson’s setlist was packed full of electro-pop bangers like the punchy “All the Time”, the warbling “WOW”, and the soaring David Guetta collaboration “This One’s for You”. Her ability to go on the most impressive of vocal runs one second, then jump into a split the next, is beyond impressive, and proves how dynamic of a performer she is.
While there were countless opportunities to dance and party, Larsson didn’t shy away from some more emotional moments as well. Both “I Can’t Fall in Love Without You” and “Uncover” – the later of which was her debut single back in 2013 – are absolutely heartbreaking, and had plenty of concertgoers fighting away tears. But seconds later, the tears were gone and the dancing picked up right where it left off. It was truly a magical and triumphant show that Portland won’t soon forget.
