At the end of last month, the experimental and enigmatic Yves Tumor came to Portland’s Wonder Ballroom. The artist born Sean Bowie has been releasing music and performing as Yves Tumor since 2015 and has been pushing boundaries ever since. Their music is impossible to define; it touches on rock, electronic, indie, pop, and countless other genres while remaining completely one of a kind. Their four studio albums are full of bold arrangements and exciting sonic risks that have helped cement Yves Tumor as an innovator of modern music.
When Tumor hit the stage in Portland, they appeared as dynamic as they sounded. The show’s opening track “Jackie” started the night off on a psychedelic note that quickly kicked into “Gospel For A New Century” which is arguably the most popular and influential song of their career. The booming chorus echoed through the ballroom while fans screamed the lyrics with gusto.
Throughout the show, Tumor was camouflaged in saturated lights that amplified their enigmatic presence. Their power, movement, and passion radiated, but the mysterious quality about them and their music remained. The band that accompanied Tumor was absolutely fantastic as well, as each instrumentalist brought a distinct flare and personality to their craft. Tumor and the band could be seen hyping each other up from start to finish and it was a pure joy to watch. Words can’t describe the presence of Yves Tumor, but we won’t forget the impression they made with this show.
