Drag icons and skinny legends Trixie Mattel and Katya Zamolodchikova opened their show Trixie and Katya Live in San Francisco last month for two nights of sold-out crowds.
Trixie and Katya Live incorporates a variety show format that follows the pair as they attempt to please their sponsorship overloads Klarma. The parody commercials were fittingly jarring and worked seamlessly into the absurdity of the show, including an advertisement with an Ariana-Grande-impersonating voice actor. Other topical and impressively elaborate parodies included a relaxation app that promised “coma-like sleep” and guest appearances from some rather unexpected celebrities.
Of course, what would a Trixie and Katya show be without the stand-up? The set started strong with the pair lightly roasting the audience (and themselves), as Mattel pointed out “here we have an elderly man in Jojo Siwa cosplay…that just describes me.” The drag queens ribbed each other and the show constantly, covering everything from Trixie’s improv skills and Katya’s difficulty learning lines to the quality of the backup dancers. Between the lighthearted insults and jabs, burn of the night had to go to the line “if I wanted to micromanage something I’d help you tuck.”
The show truly has it all. We won’t give too much away, but those lucky enough to catch the show can expect everything from solo songs by Trixie, a rather unique interpretative dancy by Katya, and-of course-the impeccable chemistry between the two. After years of performing together, Trixie & Katya are truly comedic soulmates. At every turn, they feed off each others’ energy and land every joke-whether scripted or not. At the heart of this tour are two performers having the kind of fun onstage that can only be cultivated after years of friendship, and the show is all the better for it.
