It was a gloomy Monday night in Portland when indie-rocker Soccer Mommy came to town. Sophia Allison – the woman behind Soccer Mommy – has been telling potent and emotional stories with her music for years, and she’s finally back on the road to share them with the country. On Monday, Portland’s Revolution Hall was lucky enough to be one of her most recent stops.
The show itself was an understated display of Soccer Mommy’s musical brilliance. Sophie Allison was a force behind the mic as she strummed her way through songs from her debut album Clean and her most recent album color theory. Allison and the whole band were fantastic as they created the refined musical atmosphere that filled the Revolution Hall.
The show opened with “bloodstream”, a standout track from color theory. The song details nostalgia and depression in a vivid way that immediately captured the Portland crowd. The night continued with “circle the drain” which plays like singer-songwriter music of the late 90s, and the bass-heavy “You Dog” that shows Allison demanding to be treated better in a relationship gone sour. No matter the vibe, Allison’s voice finds a way to fit it like a glove.
Her willingness to be vulnerable is perhaps her biggest strength. From lyrics to vocal presentation, she never misses an opportunity to let her audience into her world – no matter how sad or dark it be. Soccer Mommy and her musical talents were a sight to behold that we feel lucky to have experienced. Check out some photos from the show below, and be sure to see Soccer Mommy when she comes to a city near you.
