On Wednesday, January 31st, 2024, Oliver Tree brought his legendary Alone in a Crowd tour to the Moody Theater. Released on September 29, 2023, Alone in a Crowd took the stage in three acts, all featuring different Oliver Tree characters.
Opening on the tour was Jasiah, American rapper originally from Dayton, OH, and Fidlar, a punk-alternative band from LA, who haven’t hit the stage in a hot minute.
Oliver Tree’s performance was one like I had never witnessed before. It was somewhere between a concert, Saturday Night Live, and a SXSW short film exhibit. He entered the stage by being carried out on a large pink leather couch, back facing the audience. He pulled out a human-sized TV remote, clicked, the THX sound filled the room. Several funny sketches played and Tree clicked his fancy remote to change between them. The last sketch in Act I featured his persona Cornelius Cummings, who is obsessed with himself, and transitioned into “Miss You” afterwards. From there, he played some of his more recent songs from Alone in a Crowd while wildly dancing across the stage in his little Edna Mode wig.
After finishing “Essence”, the lights turned off again and Cornelius Cummings finished his segment, transitioning to Shawney Bravo, his country guy, who was introduced with his own video. Afterwards, Tree was wheeled out on a big plastic horse, singing “Cowboys Don’t Cry”, to start Act II. Act III began with a transition to Turbo, his first persona that portrayed Alien Boy, his debut album.
If you’re looking for something quirky, weird, and totally out there, it’s time to tune into Oliver Tree. His music mixes all sorts of genres, from hip-hop and rap, to pop, dance and alternative rock. Or if you’re in need of a good laugh, check out his TikTok.
