The year is 2022 and My Chemical Romance is back bigger and better than ever. Lead singer Gerard Way marched out on stage Tuesday night in a vintage cheer uniform with a flame thrower to open up the first of five sold out shows at the Forum in Los Angeles to close out their reunion tour.
The road here hasn’t been easy. Six years after breakup, the band announced a 2019 reunion show in Los Angeles. A one night only return turned into a 2020 reunion tour which turned into their 2022 reunion tour. Almost the entire U.S. arena run of shows have been sold out since they went on sale for 2020.
My Chemical Romance pulled out all of the stops for what Way called his “favorite room in the whole world”. Although the setlist spanned all of their albums and hits, each of the five shows will be focusing on a different era and album of the theirs. To start it off, night one had a large amount of favorites from their 2002 debut album “I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love”. In front of a backdrop of decaying buildings, the group managed to perfectly balance the dark heavy sound they are well known for with the fun of a cheer uniform and songs like “Planetary (GO!)”. Notably, Way dedicated their hit “Teenagers” to Quentin Tarantino, and played “Demolition Lovers” for the first time since 2011. The night ended with an encore of some of the band’s earliest releases, “Skylines and Turnstiles” and “Demolition Lovers”
The band has pulled off not only a triumphant return for themselves, but also a major win for arena rock and emo music. After reclaiming their spot as one of the best alternative rock bands out there, the future is bulletproof for My Chemical Romance.
