For those who are unfamiliar with Muna should quickly familiarize themselves with their music because they deserve your attention. On Sunday night, pop-rock band Muna took the stage before a sold-out crowd at the Filmore in San Francisco and fully solidified their place in the modern music space.
The band – which is made up of Katie Gavin, Josette Maskin, and Naomi McPherson – is known for their catchy pop tunes but what they truly deserve attention for is their energy. Their show on Sunday night was electric. From the second they took the stage and opened with “What I Want,” the second track from their self-titled album which was released earlier this year via Saddest Factory Records, their energy was unparalleled. It didn’t waver for a second, which only made the crowd sing louder and dance harder with every song that passed.
Throughout the night, all three of Muna’s albums were represented. Songs like “Number One Fan,” “Stayaway,” “Navy Blue” and more were represented throughout their set. Mid-set, the band slowed things down a bit and gave the crowd a queer-pop-country moment when they slowed things down with “Loose Garment,” “Navy Blue, and “Kind of Girl.” But then, the band picked up the pace and led the crowd through an epic dance party for the rest of the night, the track list for the dance party had everything from songs like “Home by Now,” “Anything But Me,” and “I Know A Place.” It even included a cover of “Mr. Brightside” by The Killers. But the night came to an end with the band’s hit song “Silk Chiffon,” which is a collaboration the band released with Phoebe Bridgers last year. There was not a dull moment throughout the show. The setlist was perfectly curated with the perfect balance of bangers and songs that could make you drop to your knees and cry. The versatility and balance musically was absolutely perfect.
One thing that really sets Muna apart from other artists is their passion and gratitude. Their approach to life as individuals and also as a band is so admirable and infectious – and it shows through in their stage presence. With every lyric that’s sung, every dance move, every interaction with the crowd, it’s clear that the band is here to stay due to their genuineness and affection not just for other people but for every moment they live. Their gratitude is truly unmatched, which is undoubtedly one of the biggest reasons for why their fans are so head-over-heels in love with them.
Since the release of their first album in 2017, Muna had solidified themselves as queer-pop legends. They are a band that celebrates authenticity and self discovery in its purest form. Through their activism to support the queer community off-stage to bringing their fans to “gay church” every night on tour, the place they hold in the music space is incredibly special. This beautiful community that they’ve cultivated shows through in their performances and it’s an amazing environment to experience.
While Muna’s North American tour is almost over, they surely have more touring and more dance parties ahead of them. To stay up-to-date on all things Muna, make sure to follow them on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
