The psychedelic, and at times strange, visual spectacle that MGMT pairs with it’s live show compliment and give the band a signature experience. Anyone who has attended a MGMT show or seen them at a festival describe it as one of their favorite concert experiences, and with that it’s know wonder they sold out two nights at Seattle’s Showbox SoDo.
The lights dimmed, the crowd cheered, and a stage tech came out from backstage carrying a stationary exercise bicycle center stage. After placing it in front of the microphone and leaving, MGMT walked out one by one until Andrew VanWyngarden, MGMT’s lead vocalist, mounted the bicycle to pedal during the entirety of “She Works Out Too Much.” Behind the band was several large screens which featured it’s own strange visuals, and scattered throughout the stage were different types of foliage. The crowd was completely entranced throughout the entire set, with their phones held above their heads capturing moments throughout the show and sharing video online. MGMT even provided their own social satire on the subject. Prior to playing their song “TSLAMP” (short for “time spent looking at my phone”), a screen recording of a phone was projected on their screen. The phone opened the video app and the screen displayed and distorted live video from MGMT’s crowd in front of them.
Little to no breaks were taken during MGMT’s set, allowing the crowd to continue to fully immerse themselves in the show. The setlist was heavy on MGMT’s latest album Little Dark Age, and while the crowd cheered when the hits off the album were played, the level of excitement was unmatched when the band played the songs they’re most well known for: “Time to Pretend,” “Electric Feel,” “Kids,” and “Congratulations.” MGMT shows are a level of fun and awe that is hard to describe, and Seattle will be lucky to experience it all over again for a second night.
