Indie songstress Maggie Rogers closed out her Feral Joy tour to a sold-out crowd at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco earlier this month. The iconic Bay Area venue was packed floor to balcony with thousands of fans there to experience Rogers’s triumphant return to the city.
The tour, in support of her latest album Surrender, was aptly named. The night was spent with Rogers and the crowd relishing in raucous delight at the joy of live music. Her magnetic stage presence reflects a beautiful abandon onstage, as she twirled and spun through songs like soaring opener “Overdrive” and punchy “Want Want“. She openly and unabashedly threw herself into every moment, inviting her audience into her performance for a feeling that is as joyous as it is sacred.
The rapturous nature of her performance was a common thread throughout the night. Rogers, who recently completed a Master of Religion and Public Life degree at Harvard, has undoubtedly been influenced by her study of spirituality in public gatherings. The connection between performer and crowd felt nothing short of glorious during the expansive arena ballad “Honey” and her cover of “I Wanna Dance With Somebody”. Rogers encouraged her fans to be present, even asking an attendee to stop recording on her phone during “Symphony” so that she could fully experience it in the moment.
Maggie Rogers closed the show with a mix of old and new favorites with a gentler, more subdued vibe that the more upbeat main setlist. “Fallingwater” kicked off the encore, followed by “Dog Years” and album closer “Different Kind of World”. The final song, which features Rogers and an acoustic guitar for the majority of the production before a swell of soaring sound from the full band, was the perfect way to punctuate a truly mesmerizing show.
