Following the release of her fourth studio album “so sad so sexy”, Swedish indie-pop darling Lykke Li brought her sultry stylings to Portland’s Roseland Theater on Sunday night. Right before Lykke Li took the stage, the lights turned dark red, and she emerged among a sea of dense smoke, singing the “so sad so sexy” title track. While the lyrics of the song are rather somber, the undeniable groove in the chorus had the audience swaying while they sang every word.
The rest of the show had a similar vibe, as many of the songs had melancholic lyrics, but a distinct pop appeal that made them danceable as well. Standout tracks from the show include the trap flavored “deep end” and the springy “sex money feelings die”, both of which perfectly reflect both Lykke Li as an artist, and the overall show. This sort of dichotomy is in many ways what Lykke Li is known for, as she beautifully bridges the gap between upbeat and heartbroken, relatable and melodramatic, and of course, sad and sexy.
