Sometimes, a once-in-a-lifetime talent breaks into the mainstream, and Lewis Capaldi is one of those artists. On Sunday night, Capaldi played a flawless 13-song set at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, CA. Capaldi is currently on tour promoting his forthcoming second album, Broken By Desire To Be Heavenly Sent, which will be released on May 19th via Capitol Records. In addition to his forthcoming album, Capaldi also is promoting his Netflix documentary, “How I’m Feeling Now,” which was released on April 5th and details his rise to stardom, struggle with mental health, and the process of writing his second album.
In 2018, we caught up with Capaldi right after the release of his single “Tough,” which was released as a precursor to his debut album. At the time, he was also kicking off his his first U.S. tour. Since then, Capaldi has released a debut album, embarked on a headlining tour (in addition to supporting some other artists on their own tours), and has had a number 1 single. The year 2019 was truly was skyrocketed Capaldi into super stardom. With the release of his debut album, Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent, his song “Someone You Loved” spent 54 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, including a 3 week stint at #1. Upon the release of the deluxe edition of his album in 2020, his song “Before You Go” spent 52 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 and peaked at #9 on the chart. Suffice it to say, Capaldi has been on quite a ride over the last 5 years.
Capaldi’s show at the Greek Theatre on Sunday was a testament to the hard work he puts into his art. His set started with him serenading the crowd as the sun set behind the venue. His voice rang through the venue and the trees surrounding it, creating a truly magical atmosphere. The show opened with “Broken by Desire to Be Heavenly Sent” and followed it up with “Forget Me,” which is the second single off his forthcoming sophomore album. Despite having a slight cough, Capaldi’s performance and presence kept getting stronger and stronger with each song that passed – and fans were eating it up. Capaldi played fan favorites like “Before You Go,” Bruises,” and “Grace.”
Outside of being an incredibly talented musician, Lewis Capaldi could categorize himself as a stand-up comedian. His commentary throughout the show had the crowd roaring with laughter, just as loud (if not louder) than the lyrics they sang along to during every song. Before playing “Hold Me While You Wait” —the last song in the main part of his setlist—Capaldi spent several minutes jokingly telling the crowd to not leave and to make sure they start chanting his name once he walked off stage before returning for the encore. The audience roared with laughter, but also followed his instructions to appease him once the song was over. Capaldi then returned to the stage for one final hoorah, where he came out and played his hit song “Someone You Loved” to close out the show.
Lewis Capaldi is currently on tour supporting his forthcoming sophomore album, Broken By Desire To Be Heavenly Sent. He has seven shows left on his U.S. tour, all of which are sold-out.
