Indie-pop singer-songwriter King Princess brought her latest tour to The Regency Ballroom in San Francisco last month. The highly anticipated tour was rescheduled from its original June date, and the months of waiting in the interim were palpably felt all who packed the venue.
From the moment King Princess, the stage name for Mikaela Straus, stepped onstage, her signature stage presence was front and center. Equal parts bombastic and subdued, cheeky and genuine, Straus effortlessly fostered the thrill and connection of live music. Beginning the set was soaring “Little Brother,” followed by “Cursed” and “Upper West Side.” Straus moved with impressive energy through the start of the set, dancing and crouching to sing directly to the crowd, all while playing guitar.
The crowd made their adoration for the singer known early, matching her energy throughout the night. Straus shared “I’m sensitive and need lots of yelling tonight,” something that her fans were all too happy to oblige. During the middle of the set, King Princess stood on the barricade and sang directly into the pit, with fans reaching their phones and hands towards her to capture the moment.
While much of the set showcased King Princess’s latest album Hold On Baby, the clear favorites of the night were old favorites “Pussy Is God” and “1950.”
