On a warm sunny Wednesday evening in Chicago, the Wild Hearts tour arrived at the Salt Shed on August 10th. Consisting of lineup Quinn Christopherson, Sharon Van Etten, and Angel Olsen, American singer-songwriter Julien Baker took the stage as the signature notes of “Sprained Ankle” rang out. Known for her confessional-esque lyrics and introspective writing, Julien Baker has been carving out her own space in the indie music scene since 2015, something fans of indie supergroup Boygenius are also well aware of. Given the stripped-back, acoustic nature of her discography, Julien’s set need not rely on flashy stage production or set design to deliver her message to the captivated audience. Her raw vocals with the accompaniment of her band seem to connect well enough to fans to get them to return, over and over.
As the sun set over Goose Island near the North side of Chicago, the heartfelt notes carried across the outdoor stage and beyond. Her setlist featuring a large majority of third studio album Little Oblivions such as “Ziptie,” “Hardline,” and “Bloodshot,” as well as others like 2019 single “Tokyo.” There are many times a Julien Baker set can feel like a rather spiritual experience—a warm summer evening watching the nearly full moon rise most certainly being one of them. Ten songs later, as her last song of the night, “Ringside,” came to an end, Julien left the stage to the cheering of the Chicago crowd.
