On Wednesday night, Portland’s Holocene Nightclub was lucky enough to witness Swedish sensation ionnalee’s “Remember the Future” tour. The room was packed with colorfully dressed fans, eager to see ionnalee’s brilliance in the flesh. The stage setup appeared rather simple at first, with a large black cube sitting on the back of the stage with a larger screen behind. When the show started however, we quickly realized that the setup was anything but simple. The lights dimmed, the crowd screamed, and a video began playing on the screen, introducing the room to the magical show they were about to experience.
At the beginning of her set, ionnalee strutted atop the black cube, as the euphoric beginning to “Some Body” pulsed through the speakers. Trippy black and white visuals – reminiscent of the track’s music video – were projected on the screen behind the songstress as she danced and sang along with the audience. The tantalizing and ever-changing visual effects were a perfect match for the electro-pop set, as the room was constantly filled with colorful music and even more colorful visuals. Later on in the set, ionnalee appeared with an immense light up cape, which glowed and sparkled while she danced and twirled the night away. From start to finish, ionnalee created a unique world for the audience and herself to inhabit, and we feel extremely lucky to have been welcomed into her world.
