On Friday night, Hippo Campus brought their new album LP3 to the Fox Theatre in Oakland, CA and their performance didn’t disappoint. The St. Paul, Minnesota natives are known for their fun indie rock and indie pop songs that have a roundness and comfort to them that keeps fans coming back for more album after album. Their sound is hard to resist – its infectiousness and warmth is something that’s hard to come-by in music. Throughout the course of their set on Friday night, Hippo Campus and their fans connected on a whole new level – there was not a person in the venue that wasn’t dancing throughout the entirety of the band’s set.
Hippo Campus opened their set with the lead track from LP3, “2 Young 2 Die,” followed by “Ashtray” and “Bad Dream Baby.” Even though the majority of the band’s 20 song setlist consisted of songs from their new album, there were still lots of old gems sprinkled in among them which ensured that there was something for new and old fans alike. Older songs like “Way It Goes” and “Baseball” made appearances throughout the night, which made the crowd go absolutely crazy. The band sounded better than ever before – their live musicianship and overall musicality was so impressive. They sounded so tight and cohesive; they have really hit their stride as a live band, which is great to see.
Throughout the show, the energy in the venue was absolutely contagious. The venue was vibrating and shaking for the duration of the show from all of the jumping, dancing, and general excitement over Hippo Campus. There was an electric energy that was coursing through the venue through the show, from the fans and band alike. Hippo Campus poured all of their energy into their set, and the fans absorbed that energy and gave it right back to them. The way they depended on one another only showed those in attendance how strong the bond is that the band and fans have. Their connection is special and unparalleled, which was very evident at Friday night’s show.
The band closed out their set with fan favorites “Bambi” and “Buttercup” to send fans off on a high note. Despite their fun, yet chill indie rock tunes, Hippo Campus proved on Friday night that they are a force to be reckoned with.
