Last Wednesday night, rising star GAYLE brought her first ever headlining tour to Portland’s Holocene for a night of electric pop jams. GAYLE recently played at Holocene as an opener; this time around however not only was she the headliner, but she sold it out. The 17 year old singer/songwriter has recently found loads of success due to her single “abcdefu” – which blew up on TikTok and reached the top five on the Billboard Hot 100 – and her momentum doesn’t seem to be slowing down. Last month, she released her first EP entitled a study of the human experience volume one that shows GAYLE as a rebellious fire starter in modern pop.
GAYLE’s vocal prowess is unmistakable; the soul and ferocity in her voice is something you can’t fake, and GAYLE clearly isn’t faking. She struck a perfect balance between tenderness and aggression that’s made all the more impressive by the fact she isn’t even 18 years old yet. The passion behind her lyrics is also unmistakable, with tracks like “ur just horny”, “sleeping with my friends”, and of course “abcdefu” speaking to the sort of musician that GAYLE is: moody, fierce, and unapologetic.
It’s one thing to hear the studio recordings of GAYLE’s songs, but she brings a whole new dimension to them live. Song after song, you can hear the grit in her voice and see the fire in her eyes. It isn’t just that she look comfortable on stage; she looks like she’s meant to be there. We’re so happy we got to catch GAYLE’s first headlining show in Portland and we can’t wait to see her continue to smash it on this tour!
