On Monday night, queer pop queen Fletcher played in San Francisco, CA and did not disappoint. She covered her entire discography from her heartbreaking bangers to her feel-good pop songs about falling in love with girls.
Throughout her career, Fletcher has said she wants to be a “queer Taylor Swift,” extensively detailing her break-ups, falling in love and general life experiences in each song she writes. It was clear on Monday night that her songs are resonating with people in a way an artist can only dream of. From the second Fletcher stepped on stage opening with her song “girls, girls, girls” it was clear that the crowd was completely infatuated by her. She immediately followed it up with “Forever” and “Cherry,” which is a collaboration she released with Hayley Kiyoko late last year. The energy in the room from the second Fletcher stepped on stage was electric and every ounce of energy the crowd gave, Fletcher and her band gave right back to them.
So much of Fletcher’s music is deeply rooted in New York City, which is where she went to college and where she first fell in love. Her stage set depicted a grungy New York City street, equipped with graffiti, scaffolding, and a sidewalk – which gave the audience the perfect framework for hearing her songs live and gave them the opportunity to experience her music in an entirely new way. It brought a new life to her breakout EP You Ruined New York City For Me, bringing a new layer of realism and relatability to songs like “All Love” and “Undrunk.”
The year 2020 should of been Fletcher’s year. The release of her project THE S(EX) TAPES put her on a clear trajectory to pop stardom. “The Sex Tapes” gave the Fletcher Fam countless favorites, including “Sex (With My Ex),” “Feel,” and “Bitter” – all of which were covered in Monday night’s set. But one of the most poignant parts of the night was the closing number – “Healing” – which is a song details the importance of healing and honoring the process that comes with it. It was an empowering and uplifting note to end the night on, sending fans off with a positive message that was sung with such love and sincerity, right up until the last note.
Fletcher is a force to be reckoned with, and Monday night only further proved that. Her talent, energy and pure adoration for her fans is truly unmatched. As one of pop’s rising and brightest stars, this will surely not be the last you see if Cari Fletcher.
