Many YouTube artists create their own music and try to take their online presence into the real, performing world. Few have success, with the most notable being the Australian Pop artist Troye Sivan, continuing to make waves on the music charts. dodie proves that she is capable of doing the same, and it becomes even more obvious when you see the loyal and devoted fanbase that has been following and selling out her tour across the US.
dodie fans showed up early for this show, and those first in line were lucky. The line for the Portland venue wrapped around the venue two blocks away, and was so long it had to wrap back toward the venue. The word fan is an understatement to describe dodie’s following, as it’s more of a community of likeminded and adoring people. All are welcoming and friendly, and care deeply not only for the singer/songwriter but for the safety and comfort of each other as well.
The show itself was incredibly intimate, as dodie has the effect to turn a large venue into a small space. Making it appear she is singing and sharing her music one on one with you. It’s clear that dodie’s music and art touches her fans in a very personal way. For upbeat songs like “Monster,” the audience is screaming and dancing along with joy. However, for the more serious and slow songs, fans sing quietly to themselves as you can hear soft sniffles from her emotional fans. With songs about love, heartbreak, and especially about sexuality, dodie is more than a musician and stands as a role model to her fans. Her courage and openness inspires these young people to be comfortable with who they are.
With only a trio of EPs behind her, it’s clear dodie has the potential to grow ever more. And with an incredible fanbase and community behind her, she will have the support to become a big player in music.
