It’s a Friday night and there’s an all-ages queue outside the Fine Line in downtown Minneapolis. It’s still daylight out and a bit windy. Cherry Glazerr fans are smiling, talking to each other with rosy red cheeks.
“I got into them a year ago,” exclaimed one fan to another. “I just met them and they signed my record at the Electric Fetus,” the other fan responded.
Singer and guitarist Clementine Creevy has a tight grip on her fans. They love her music and they knew she’d love them back. Cherry Glazerr has been touring outside of their hometown of Los Angeles for the better part of a decade.
It’s all just anticipation now. At 6 o’clock the doors opened. This music town knows the routine. Empty your pockets, hold anything metal above your head, and hold out your right wrist to get stamped. Then it’s off to the races as everyone rushed to the front of the stage until this 650-person capacity venue with old warehouse walls was filled. Openers Wombo from Louisville, KY put a curse on the venue with their dark, noisy and deep sounds.
Now it’s time for Cherry Glazerr.
First there’s a roar, and then silence. “What’s up!?” Creevy shouts to a roar. “We’re excited to be here,” she says before beginning her first tune “I Touched You With My Chaos.”
Every song for the rest of the night featured some sort of rocking breakdown. A moment for the guitars to shred, synths to zap and basses to lick. It offered a moment for everyone standing on the floor or sitting in the upstairs lounge to stop singing along and bang their head. Each song would conclude and applause would follow.
Perhaps the coolest part of Cherry Glazerr is their on-stage presence. Creevy would spin underneath her microphone every so often. It looked like a beautiful exorcism.
Bassist Sami Perez knew how to get down, bobbing her head while picking strings. She’s also an engineer, and has been a top contributor to studio audio mastering for years.
Cherry Glazerr knows how to control a crowd. They played fan favorites all night long. The crowd was especially into “Had Ten Dollaz.”
The band continues their US Tour with one week of east coast dates with opener Ex-Pilots.
