Day One of Seattle’s Capitol Hill Block Party set the tone for the rest of the weekend, featuring upbeat performances from artists including Dillon Frances, Sol, Sam Lachow, Alvvays and much more.
Though we stayed at the main stage for most of the day, aside from a detour to see the multi-instrumentalist and solo performance by the talented Kelly Lee Owens, Capitol Hill features a lot to choose from. With four stages, food by inhabiting and local restaurants, multiple bars, a bear garden, a variety of retail services and late night after parties to keep the festival going – Capitol Hill brings it’s Seattle and Pacific Northwest community together for a three day weekend that doesn’t stop moving.
Due to unexpected circumstances, Goldlink’s performance was cancelled. Instead, Sol’s performance was moved to a later time, and Seattle rapper Sam Lachow jumped in at a moments notice to take the spot and complete the lineup. If anyone in the crowd was disappointed by the change of lineup nobody showed it. The audience for both acts were highly engaged, in a large part due to the showmanship of the artists. Lachow works his stage reaching and talking to attendees in the crowd, having them toss them their phones so he can take selfies/videos and even jumped into the crowd for a quick crowdsurf. Similarly, Sol also constantly moves to interact with his audience. The highlight of his performance was riding the crowd in an inflatable raft.
EDM artist Dillon Francis closed out the first night of Capitol Hill Block Party, and blew away the crowd with his impressive light display and visuals. The crowd took up nearly the entirety of the closed off section of Pike Street for the fast, and everyone was packed in tight. The lack of room didn’t stop anyone, and the entire crowd had their hands up and moved throughout the entire set.
