For a lack of better words, Angel Olsen has the voice of a literal angel. She blessed Portland, Oregon’s Newmark Theatre with two back to back nights of her latest tour: Tiny Dreams. The Tiny Dreams Solo Tour is her first U.S. tour since 2014.
Portland’s Newmark Theatre is a beautifully intimate venue, perfect for Angel. The natural acoustics of the room helped carry and echo her already incredible voice. On-stage she was minimally lit with a few spotlights surrounding her, the large venue spotlight overhead and utilized a smoke machine. The moody setting complimented her music, and produced sharp highlights and shadows of the solo artist.
When the houselights dimmed, the circle of spotlights came on and Angel Olsen stepped onto the stage; the murmuring crowd fell silent. This was how the entire show went on. The crowd was so silent and respectful while she performed. Living in and taking in the moment, even little to no phones were raised throughout the night. However, when each song ended Angel stepped in to add charmingly sarcastic banter and interact with her fans. Telling jokes and stories, and asking lighthearted questions between her somber songs of heartbreak, such as “Why is Portland’s airport called PDX?” Even when first walking onto the stage she began with her sarcastic commentary and jokes while tuning her guitar, afterward saying “I’m sorry, I don’t mean to be this casual before I even play a song.” Angel is an artist so effortlessly cool and talented, the Portland audience every moment of the entire show.
Angel Olsen played old songs and new. Without a typical band backing her she returned to her roots of just a girl and a guitar, in an intimate setting that belonged to her and each individual member of the audience. Her presence alone is able to grab hold of a room, and her vocal range has the ability to leave a crowd stunned. It was a special night for all in attendance, and a special tour not to be overlooked.
