If you’re looking for a pop-star that’s conceptual, artistic, and enigmatic, all while making some of the best pop music out there, look no further than Allie X. Currently on tour supporting fellow left-of-center pop songstress MARINA, Allie X has been wowing crowds with her avant-garde, yet accessible approach to pop music. Portland was lucky enough to be one of the North American dates that included Allie, as she is only supporting five of the dates on this leg of the tour.
Come showtime, a large white light sat in the middle of the stage, shining through the dark fog that was quickly filling the area. The atmosphere was dark, moody, and even a bit haunting, perhaps due to the dark nature of her new single “Fresh Laundry”. When Allie appeared, she looked as enigmatic as ever. The booming “Bitch” was a perfect opener, as its quirk and bombast beautifully fit the scene. While Allie performed fan favorites like “Science”, “Paper Love”, and “Casanova”, she dedicated much of her set to new material.
Recently released single “Fresh Laundry” was undoubtedly a highlight, as were the several unreleased tracks that Allie performed. The new tracks all covered different sonic territory, yet they all make sense in the same musical universe as “Fresh Laundry”. Seeing Allie seamlessly switch between the different sounds in her set was extremely impressive. Songs like the dark “Fresh Laundry” and the peppy “Paper Love” might not make sense together in theory, but Allie uses the dichotomy to her advantage, making her set all the more intriguing. While Allie’s set was very different than MARINA’s, their contrasting styles made for a dynamic night of pop brilliance, and we’re so happy we were there to see it.
