On a rainy Tuesday in mid October, hyperpop duo 100 gecs brought their unique brand of musical chaos to Portland’s Wonder Ballroom. The duo consists of Dylan Brady and Laura Les – both of whom sing, write, and produce together to create the experimental and indescribable world of 100 gecs.
Their music is unlike anything that came before them. They create a musical kaleidoscope of genres and styles that has proven to be as beloved as it is polarizing. Their wacky lyrics are met by even wackier instrumentals that span everything from dubstep to ska. While they are undoubtedly polarizing, their pop appeal is undeniable as well. They are widely recognized as one of the most influential acts in the world of hyperpop and their influence only seems to be growing.
The ground shook and the speakers blared as 100 gecs’ insanity filled the Wonder Ballroom. The show was a perfect representation of their songs; short, loud, and impactful. The set lasted around 45 minutes and included most of gecs’ debut album 1000 gecs, touched on their remix album 1000 gecs and The Tree of Clues, and featured lots of unreleased material that’s expected to be on their upcoming 10000 gecs album.
Their performance style – much like their music – is pure energy. Brady and Les stomped and sang their way around the Wonder Ballroom stage as they blasted through their colorful set. The crowd was incredibly energetic as well which made for a fun atmosphere in the Ballroom. Their excitement could be felt before the duo even stepped on stage, and there was near constant jumping and head-banging once they did. Songs like “money machine”, “ringtone”, and “stupid horse” gave fans a chance to scream along with the duo, while the new songs gave them taste of what’s to come for 100 gecs. It was a crazy night of gec-dom, which is exactly what we were hoping for.
