Last October, Beyond the Stage released an interview with emerging pop talent Pepper Lewis who, at that time, had just dropped her latest single “Same Stuff” and also announced her upcoming EP She Told Me to Sing My Heart Out. Now six months later, and her EP fully available on streaming platforms, Lewis jumps back into the music scene with her newest single “Little Man.”
When sitting on the couch watching American Crime Story: Impeachment, the Ryan Murphy show that chronicles the affair and scandal of Monica Lewinsky and Bill Clinton, Lewis had an epiphany. That burst of thought would turn out to be the beginning of the creation of “Little Man,” a song that tackles the complicated feelings of falling in love with somebody already taken.
In a press release, Lewis describes the origins of the song: “I wrote “Little Man” after watching ‘American Crime Story: Impeachment,’ because I was so inspired by Monica Lewinsky’s consistent bravery during the media’s first major ‘cancellation. It was wild to learn about the power imbalance between Clinton and Lewinsky, and yet she was brutally publicly shamed and vilified, simply because she was a woman. This pattern is still very alive today in our society, and I think it’s time we put a mirror up to the reality of romantic entanglements based off of power imbalance.”
Uplifting as a form of cultural criticism defines Lewis’ music. Her music takes the average and general pop song about love and elevates it to form a distinct perspective communicated with an equally distinct voice. Ultimately, the young artist wants her music to uplift people which involves critiquing the systems that keep them down. “Little Man” is no exception and Lewis’ purpose makes her an exciting musician to keep an eye out for.
