Dedicated to her late mother, Pepper Lewis officially released her debut EP She Told Me To Sing My Heart Out. Lewis brings out her signature spunk and sass in the first three songs and ends with a more raw, heartfelt tune titled “Lisa’s Song”. This EP is full of color and depth, allowing us a closer look into Lewis’ world.
The project is composed of four pop gems. The first track “Planetarium” encourages listeners to groove along. While the song is about struggling to be vulnerable, the funky vibe and instrumentation allows listeners to let loose.
Next up is “Same Stuff”, an ode to shaking off negative emotions. This bop puts an emphasis on the important of mental health, as well. Bringing the spunk once again, Lewis gives us the perfect jam.
“Gucci Song” is the third track- a feminist anthem with sticky melodies. Lewis harps on the societal pressures put on young girls. Like the previous two songs, listeners will want to get up and twirl along.
The last song on the EP is dear to Lewis’ heart. It’s titled “Lisa’s Song”, preserving her mother’s energy and spirit. Lewis encourages us to own our own stories- even the darkest parts. The song concludes with a recorded voicemail from her mom, telling her to “sing her heart out”, revealing the inspiration behind the EP’s title.
Lewis’ electric energy and swirling songs showcase her unwavering commitment to be herself. She is becoming the pop star she had always dreamed of by singing her heart out- keeping the promise she made to her mother.
