HBO’s newest show, Vinyl is nearly upon us! A collaborative effort between legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese, Rolling Stones singer/songwriter Mick Jagger, writer Terence Winter (Boardwalk Empire, The Wolf of Wall Street), and writer Rich Cohen (Monsters, The Fish That Ate the Whale); Vinyl is a new drama series set in 1970s New York. The show follows record label president Richie Finestra (played by Bobby Cannavale) who seeks to save his company without losing his humanity. The show promises plenty of sex, drugs, and rock’n’roll as it dives into the genesis of punk rock, disco, and hip-hop.
HBO and Noisey threw a special premiere party several nights ago in Austin, Texas at the Alamo Draft House Cinema. The audience was invited to travel back in time to the 1970’s music scene with special guest and Vinyl star James Jagger. Jagger portrays rockstar Kip Stevens, singer and songwriter for fictional band The Nasty Bits. The actor met with fans and shared some of his favorite moments from the set of the show.
A show so heavily centered around the music industry obviously needs to deliver on the soundtrack, and Vinyl plans to do exactly that. Not only is the entire first volume of music — featuring new material from Sturgill Simpson and Kaleo, hits from Mott the Hoople and Otis Redding, re-recordings from David Johansen of The New York Dolls and plenty more — already available for purchase and currently streaming on Spotify, but the show will uniquely release brand new digital EPs to coincide with every episode of Vinyl. These EPs will be available for purchase through iTunes and feature both completely original material and re-recorded classics by artists such as Iggy Pop, Charli XCX, Chris Cornell, Trey Songz, Charlie Wilson, The Arcs, and plenty more!
Vinyl premieres on February 14th at 9PM EST on HBO and will also feature Olivia Wilde, Ray Romano, Ato Essandoh, Max Casella, P.J. Byrne, J.C. MacKenzie, Birgitte Hjort Sørensen, Juno Temple, Jack Quaid, James Jagger and Paul Ben-Victor. Make sure to tune-in and also stream the first official soundtrack volume below! After the premiere, come back and let us know what you think!
