Today is New Music Friday the Thirteenth. Beyond The Stage is excited to combine two unofficial holidays into one this week. Let’s start with the latest release from one of music’s most captivating groups of the past decade.
The best of New Music Friday:
Boygenius – The Rest
Boygenius has become a generation-defining supergroup. Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker have already captivated the world with the record. What’s left is their new EP the rest, and it’s a continued celebration of their outstanding achievements in the field of excellence.
Boygenius might have performed 2023’s most extravagant concert to a sold-out Madison Square Garden last week. For those not in attendance, there’s still triumph to appreciate and adore. A supergroup of three prolific songwriters made unapologetic femininity, queerness and positively brash noise the epicenter of music’s most unique night this year.
The rest is a 4-piece companion of tracks not on the record. They go toe-to-toe with the full-length record, if not in the powerfulness of sound then it’s in the ability to make fans excited for extra collaboration from an adored group.
L’Rain – I Killed Your Dog
L’Rain is an artist who has such a variety of talents that it’s difficult to pinpoint her style. The composer, multi-instrumentalist and lyricist has often been called an experimental musician. Her new LP I Killed Your Dog is slow and smooth with synths and saxophone to start. The first non-interlude track “Our Funeral” is a psychedelic slow burn.
L’Rain has spent the past few years touring on and off, mostly showing off her 2021 LP Fatigue. Her latest explosion of tracks has been a joyous aftertaste. L’rain has been the opener for a variety of genre-spanning groups. Even fans who showed up to see the headliners have stood in awe after watching her band’s live performances.
Now she’ll spend a few more months on the road for some headlining shows and opening dates with Brittany Howard in North America to close out a monstrous 2023.
New Music Friday top picks:
Bad Bunny – Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar Mañana
Geese – 4D Country EP
Hotline TNT – “Out of Town”
Ice Spice – “Pretty Girl”
Squirrel Flower – Tomorrow’s Fire
