The Best of New Music Friday:
Charli XCX – Brat and It’s Completely Different But Also Still Brat
Charli XCX can do whatever she likes. She put up flashy neon green billboards featuring other artists’ names at random places all over the world and everyone knew what they were. Now the sounds on BRAT are getting a fresh coat on Brat and It’s Completely Different But Also Still Brat; It’s mostly the same but with a surprise on each track when the listener can say “oh snap, that’s insert popular artist here.”
Take the single “360,” which has been remixed to feature Robyn and Yung Lean. Hearing those two adds an immediate ‘newness’ factor to BRAT, a record that still feels so fresh despite being four months old (that’s a dig at the current short-attention-span album cycles). The song still starts with a synthy rhythm and will make many people dance from the second it starts. Now it will allow clubbers to pretend they’re singing in someone else’s voice. Of course it should, that’s fun and fun’s the whole point of BRAT.
Caroline Polachek transforms “Everything Is Romantic” into a duet of wing-girls keeping each other’s backs. Big name guests are all over the place. Bon Iver gilded onto “I Think About It All the Time” with a soulful voice; Julian Casablancas has a dreamy auton-tune moment on “Mean Girls.” Matty Healy from the 1975 slowly draws across “I Might Say Something Stupid.” The version of “Talk talk” with Troye Sivan is actually wicked.
Some of these songs are reimagined, some only have additional but noteworthy vocal performances. Whatever these songs are, they are ultimately Brat and It’s Completely Different But Also Still Brat.
