Love summer? Summer love! What’s not to love about summer? Summer months are here and it’s time to think about summertime! Here’s a full list of new music to carry into this summer weekend. Summer!
Riton, David Guetta & Jozzy – “Where You Want”
So you’re out looking for romance at the club and everything from the fit to rhythm feels right. The only thing you’re not feeling is physical with the person you want to feel physical with. Cue the summer’s newest dancefloor filler.
“Here we go, babe // Put my hands where you want them // Turn me on, babe // Put my hands where you want them,” sings Jozzy over the beats from generational producers Riton and David Guetta.
It’s a song about feeling free on the floor, having complete trust in another person and dancing yourself into a good time.
It brings another chance for Jozzy to take a rightful spotlight with borderline psychedelic stream-of-consciousness lyrics. Her voice sets the tone just as much as the sounds underneath it do. The whole combination is a recipe for a grade-A pop song.
Lastlings – “Gravity”
Another shoetapping and knee-twisting pop song makes the list–this time from Japanese-Australian sibling electronic duo Lastlings just weeks before their new album Perfect World releases on RÜFÜS DU SOL’s Rose Avenue Records.
The lyrical delivery is poppy and the production level is on point–if not a touch industrial. “Gravity” is a song that everyone who loves dancing can appreciate. Listeners who prefer music technology and understand even the tiniest bit about the wide range of synthesizers will make a fantastic connection with these smart songwriters. They’ll likely find a deeper connection with those fans and even create new ones when their record drops June 23.
Squid – O Monolith
In a world where a number of young progressive rock bands have spun around on their own heads and started taking up lessons in other subgenres, one remains the progg-iest.
Squid have returned with their second LP, O Monolith via Warp Records. This UK crew has their own sound, but for nearly half a decade they didn’t fully expand on it. Don’t deny their debut record Bright Green Field’s brilliance, it is really hard to release a nearly hour-long record of noise and political anguish, but it sounded eerily similar to prior EPs and singles.
O Monolith sounds unlike anything Squid has done before, mostly because of how “prog rock” it is. This album fills 8 songs into 41 minutes. That leaves plenty of room for ambiance, just not the kind you’d expect.
It’s not just low-sounding whale noise but crescendoing trumpets, too. Throw your experimental side a bone and hear this record.
Rowan Drake – Dear Ella,
Nearly three years after debuting on the single “Closure,” Rowan Drake finally has an EP to share with the world.
It’s an adoring collection of soft songs made for long drives.
The EP comes into its own with “Elephant In The Room” which became something of a cult pop hit in January.
Lots of tracks on this EP were already released, but there are plenty of new surprises on Dear Ella, that make it worth fans’ time.
Closer “Haunt Me” is carried by Drake’s vocals on a slow three-minute track. When it ends, the only thing left to wonder is when we’ll get a Rowan Drake LP. It seems like he’s on the path to making that happen sooner than later.
Noah Kahan – Stick Season (We’ll All Be Here Forever)
Noah Kahan’s added seven songs to his October 2022 album including an extended version of the song “The View Between Villages.”
Folk pop fans can rejoice with Kahan’s new releases. It offers plenty of summer jams.
It’s also been a busy few weeks for Kahan, who recently launched The Busyhead Project to support mental health. New music is just a cherry on top for an artist making a difference in sound and community.
