The Best of New Music Friday:
Lambrini Girls – Who Let The Dogs Out

Lambrini Girls are a loud band from Brighton, UK. They’re angry about cops, workplaces, men and filthy rich nepo babies. They sing with discontent about most mainstream subjects and male-trope attitudes like BDE on their new debut LP Who Let The Dogs Out. Lambrini Girls singer/guitarist Phoebe Lunny and bassist Lilly Marcieira bark out a lifetime’s worth of built-up ruthless aggression across this 29-minute album, out today on City Slang.
If that didn’t describe the kind of rage this band has, Lambrini Girls describe themselves as your nan in the boot of a car with a croissant in her mouth listening to Bikini Kill for the first time, except they are not Bikini Kill and they are not your nan. Lambrini Girls are more raging than some prior bands like Bikini Kill who radiate similar thematic tones.
What’s the difference between the Lambrini Girls lyrics “Oh my god, hi do you remember me? You reposted that thing I wrote about women in music // Thank you so much for doing your bit” and their less ravenous punk counterpart Lush’s lyric from the 1996 song “Ladykillers,” which touts “Hey you, the muscles and the long hair, telling me that women are superior to men // Most guys just don’t appreciate this, you just tried convincing me you’re better than them,” The key isn’t in the lyrics (though, Lambrini Girls today feel more innovative than the bands who laid their attitude’s groundwork). It’s the wailing mix of guitar pedal devices and clanking drumheads that unlock their differences. Only other modern rock acts have this innovative loudness, like the kind that can be found in a Mannequin Pussy song. Lunny’s vocals are comparable to Dublin’s SPRINTS, her nervousness and temper is like that of Irish band Mhaol, she shares an intense infatuation with Amyl and The Sniffers singer Amy Taylor for a certain expletive that can’t be found in this reader-friendly publication. This band is like one big ball of their counterparts, yet they’re their own act all at once.
Fans of noisy punk rock with good lyrics will enjoy Lunny and Marcieira’s first full-length effort. There’s a cowbell guiding the fast tempo on the bursting track “Nothing Tastes As Good As It Feels.” This record sounds like it would be great to see performed live. That’s luckily an opportunity fans will get soon. Lambrini Girls are touring the UK, EU and North America from now until mid-2025. It will be a great chance to hear new tracks like “You’re Not From Around Here” at the same time as dancing to singles that initially caught fans’ attention like “Lads Lads Lads” and “Help Me I’m Gay.”
Lambrini Girls are cut from a similar cloth, but never will be other acts. Not Bikini Kill, not Lush, They won’t be your nan, either. They’re Lambrini Girls and they write party music for angry queer femmes.
