The Best of New Music Friday:
Bon Iver – SABLE fABLE
It wouldn’t be an understatement to say Justin Vernon is one of the most admired artists of the 21st Century. The Bon Iver ringleader has received that honor by being very fastidious. See, it’s taken six years for Vernon and co. to release SABLE fABLE, the first full-length Bon Iver record since i,i.
Danielle Haim, who is also known for keeping her songs sounding tight, is tapped to make a vocal appearance on “If Only I Could Wait.” The song is one example of how Bon Iver pushes boundaries in a field where they are already leading theorists; The subject is production, and Vernon makes this one a spectacle that’s also inspiring to listeners. SABLE fABLE displays how far Bon Iver is willing to experiment within a studio space.
The 12-song LP includes three tracks from 2024’s SABLE EP, plus new songs that all carry that trademark Bon Iver electro-pop sound with a hint of folk. But SABLE fABLE is not all “more of the same” for Justin Vernon and his friends. “Everything Is Peaceful Love” has the R&B tones that had barely seen daylight on previous Bon Iver releases. It’s a welcome surprise for fans who wanted some evolution on this new record.
Dijon and Flock Of Dimes also drop by to appear on “Day One,” a straightforward song with a serious tone, bumping bass tones, slight piano chords and high pitched vocal performances. It’s about as all over the place as it sounds, though, without being comical. It’s an enjoyable track.
So yes, Vernon is very attentive to and concerned about accuracy and detail in his productions. But even with that strictness, he still gets loose by going on a genre-bending journey, adding exciting artists to feature on his tracks–despite some thinking he picked some of those musicians’ names from a hat. This shows a new sense of maturity for an already seasoned act. Bon Iver is a group so confident in their ability to mix albums that they can now get even more creative without sacrificing quality. SABLE fABLE is a showcase of recorded music with a cast pulled together by its likeliest hero: Justin Vernon, the music world’s point person for high quality productions.
