No one was really sure what “Camp Mars” was going to be about when Thirty Seconds to Mars first dropped the name and dates almost two weeks ago in an email to fans, known as the Echelon, with promise of more details to come. Tuesday, June 16th, the band officially announced their own music summer camp escape from the city. Camp Mars is scheduled for August 22-24 this year in Malibu, California. Activities such as climbing, yoga, hiking with Jared, Black Fuel Coffee with Shannon, Cooking with Tomo and a “Church of Mars” performance will be offered to the lucky campers and those who are able to snag a day pass for this one of a kind experience.
The packages are going to be sold through frontman Jared Leto’s company Adventures in Wonderland starting Friday, June 19th at 9 A.M. PST. Camping packages for a two night, three day stay start at $799 and go all the way up to $1,999 depending on how luxurious participants would like their camping experience to be. There are two different kinds of day passes offered as well; the Deer Package (one day) for $399 and then the Rabbit Package (all three days) for $549.
Anyone who follows Jared on social media knows that he loves going out and hiking, so something like this doesn’t seem very strange coming from his band. I’m already jealous of the people who are going to be able to attend, especially since it was announced that there are only 550 overnight packages and the day passes will also be limited.
This isn’t the first time that Thirty Seconds to Mars has put together things that get them closer to a smaller group of fans. A few years ago, the band began Church of Mars. The event originally took place in churches in places like New York City, Boston and Philadelphia, where a lucky group of fans got to go and see an intimate acoustic performance. Since then the band has done Church of Mars performances around the world and has recorded a few to stream for fans unable to attend on Leto’s website, VyRT.
It will be interesting to see how Camp Mars is going to play out and whether it is going to lead to more bands trying to do similar things. It could also turn into Leto setting up AOW to run a similar thing for other bands, similar to what the company has done with meet and greet packages and VyRT streaming other concerts and events for bands.
Thirty Seconds to Mars just finished up touring in Europe so Jared could make the time to stay in Canada and film his new movie, Suicide Squad, set to be released in August of next year. Leto will be starring as the Joker alongside Will Smith and Margot Robbie. My only question now is whether Jared will still be rocking his lime green Joker hair at Camp Mars or if he’s planning on going more natural for the outdoor experience.
