Move Like Creatures knows that dealing with mental health, especially in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, is hard. The band members, which consists of Nancy Bombard, Melissa Koziel, Brian Bello, and Ryan Reynolds, found each other during the pandemic thanks to a Craigslist advertisement posted by Bombard and have since kept mental health at the forefront of their work. Bringing their experience to the table (Bombard holds a degree in psychology and Bello is a practicing psychiatrist), Move Like Creatures grooves out while expressing their frustrations with mental health in their debut single “Mind Reader.”
“Mind Reader” is a dazzling entry into today’s discography. The song teeters on the familiar, filling audiences’ ears with an electric, retro sound, but it’s Bombard’s deft (and catchy) lyricism and fresh subject matter that catapults “Mind Reader” into the twenty-first century and relevancy. The combination of the classic vibes and new domain work beautifully in tandem to deliver a piece that deserves nothing less than to be a smash hit.
Speaking on the meaning of the song, Bombard explains “I feel that now, more than ever, there is a big movement for mental health and speaking about struggles surrounding the experience. This song manifested from my personal experience with those struggles and not always knowing what the right path is to heal. It is a lot of trial and error and learning to push through unsolicited advice so this song is for anyone going through that, you aren’t alone. ”
In support of the single, Move Like Creatures dropped a live performance on their Youtube channel. While a music video for the song already exists, the band felt it necessary to do their best to at least mimic the sensations of live performance, saying, “with the pandemic going on there are less opportunities to play live so we put our focus into writing and releasing our music. People are either not able to, or comfortable yet to attend live performances so we wanted to release something anyone could watch from home.” Even if live performance is limited as of now, the energy Move Like Creatures bring to their performance is infectious, even through the screen.
