It’s been less than two weeks since Miley Cyrus released her new song “Flowers” and it has already claimed and maintained the number one spot across the charts. With over 138 million streams (and counting) on Spotify, “Flowers” managed to break Spotify’s history by becoming the record holder for the most streamed song in a seven-day period– a striking success for Cyrus since the release of her 2020 album, Plastic Hearts.
In a disco-esque and upbeat sound, Cyrus preaches the importance of self-love and healing after a painful breakup. With lyrics of “I can hold my own hand” and “I can love myself better than you can,” “Flowers” highlights the independence and power in recognizing that you don’t need a plus one to feel complete. And if Cyrus’s self-empowerment and presence don’t come through enough with her lyrics, her music video definitely will.
Dancing amidst the streets of Los Angeles in high heels, Cyrus makes the perfect comeback to music– and she even has the gold, shimmery dress to help make the statement! But one thing is for sure about Miley Cyrus, she simply can’t be tamed. Her edge and lyricism in this song on what it means to be free, independent and capable of creating her own happy endings make “Flowers” so much more impactful.
In addition to the single, Cyrus announced the upcoming release of her eighth studio album Endless Summer Vacation which is available to listen to on March 10. While the number of tracks and titles are unknown, the album will be produced by Tyler Johnson, Kid Harpoon, Mike Will Made-It and Greg Kurstin. The album can be pre-ordered on vinyl, CD and digitally on shop.mileycyrus.com.
