Ladies and Gentlemen, Megan Thee Stallion has done it. The overwhelming anticipation over this hip hop superstar has culminated into one of the best album releases of 2020. Her album, Good News, takes listeners through life stories, cultural movements and bad-ass mantras. This is a NO SKIP album. Each song has a signature hook and sound that shine for a unique tracklist that ultimately come together to form this work of art. Good News features collaborations with some of the hottest names in music, and it’s the singer’s debut album. Megan Thee Stallion officially released this album on November 20th. Along with it came a euphonious tracklist featuring lyrical inventiveness, body positivity and self-expression.
One might think surviving a gunshot would be an incredibly traumatic experience hindering a person’s entire life. While this is true in the majority of cases, Megan Thee Stallion turned that horrific event into an explosive first track. She calls out the people involved in the attack and simply tells them she’s not thinking of them. The song, “Shots Fired,” is the perfect marriage of aggression and self-confidence- a constant pairing in the singer’s album. “Circles” illustrates the singer’s signature bad-ass persona and emphasizes her ability to remain resilient. The first collaboration, “Cry Baby” fittingingly features rapper DaBaby. This duo is just what we needed as their verses feed into each other with such ease.
“Do It On The Tip” features the City Girls and hints at the signature aura of sex positivity wafting from every song on this album. One of the most anticipated collabs on this album appears in “Freaky Girls” as Megan pairs up with SZA. The two goddesses of hip hop do not disappoint with the juxtaposition of SZA’s heavenly vocals and Megan Thee Stallion’s hard hitting verses. If you’ve been on TikTok in the past two weeks, then the next song “Body” needs no introduction. You already know this song is the next soundtrack to your girls night. I don’t make the rules, this is just how it has to be. Readers with a vast supply of TikTok knowledge also know the prevalence of “Savage Remix” featuring Beyonce. This song lead to one of the most popular dances on the app and its no surprise that this anthem came from none other than queen Megan.
My absolute favorite song on the album is “Outside.” The singer has more of a lyrical voice through her verses that are both comforting and empowering. Her sense of confidence is palpable throughout this entire song. She used this album as a platform for spreading the type of messages young women everywhere need to hear. Good News has to be your new go-to album. Each song is a masterpiece in its own right and together, they create the fresh sound of Megan Thee Stallion. Stream the album on Spotify here.
